Transformative Public Education

Welcome to The Intergenerational School (TIS). Founded in 2000 by Dr. Cathy Whitehouse & Dr. Peter Whitehouse, The Intergenerational School has consistently been recognized as one of the leading public charter schools in the country. TIS is located in Cleveland, Ohio, serves grades K-8, and is a free public school.

Students at TIS learn in multi-age classrooms of about 16 students. They are not separated in groups of “1st Graders” or “2nd Graders” with all students learning the same thing at the same time.  Instead the classes have students ranging in age spans of about 3 or 4 years, who come together to create a dynamic learning community where everyone is on an individual learning path, and has opportunities to be both a teacher and a learner.

Serving Grades K-8

TIS serves students in Elementary and Middle School, is open to all students and families, and uses a non-traditional educational approach.

Educational Excellence

TIS is consistently one of the top-rated public charter schools in Ohio - and is the only school with EIGHT Excellent+ ratings from the Ohio Department of Education!

Tuition Free Public School

We are a tuition-free public charter school, located in the beautifully restored St. Luke’s Hospital building on Shaker Blvd. See Open House dates and come in for a visit!

A Community of Intergenerational Learners

Our Mission: The Intergenerational Schools connect, create and guide a multigenerational community of lifelong learners and spirited citizens.

Our Vision: The Intergenerational Schools are successful Intergenerational Learning Communities that are transforming Cleveland, and the world, into a better and more equitable global community.  The Intergenerational Schools will serve as a model to encourage and assist other communities to create similar learning environments.

Our Values: Personal integrity, a work ethic, choice & accountability, celebration of diversity, interpersonal skills, shared and responsible use of resources, honoring the interconnected web of life & time.

"I can't believe how lucky we are that The Intergenerational School is in our community. Thank you, thank you, thank you." - TIS Parent of Two Children

Our Intergenerational Approach

Our educational model was born from the desire to create a school that honored and respected children and enabled them to each learn in a time frame and manner that suited their individual capabilities. To do this meant rejecting age as the single most important factor in organizing the educational environment and experiences.

Our schools were founded on two mainstay principles:

  • Learning is a lifelong developmental process
  • Knowledge is socially constructed

These principles are translated into a developmental curriculum based on five stages of learning, rather than arbitrary age- and calendar-based grade levels. Students progress through the stages based on demonstrated mastery of learning objectives. Student success is the constant; the time needed to accomplish that success is the variable.

"We love that TIS knows how important physical fitness is for kids, and makes sure they exercise EVERY DAY!" - Very happy Intergenerational Parent

Nationally Recognized by Eisner Prize

Our Intergenerational Approach earned the top nation-wide prize for intergenerational learning in 2014, The Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence! The Eisner Foundation supports and promotes organizations working to unite ‘multiple generations, especially seniors and youth, to bring about positive and lasting changes in their community.’ Thanks to the accomplishments of our students, staff, families, volunteers, partners, supporters and co-founders over the past 14 years, the Intergenerational Schools continue to grow as a community of lifelong learners and spirited citizens, modeling the ideals of The Eisner Foundation.
